DSS Lockers goes live in Donostia: 24/7 unstaffed luggage storage five minutes from La Concha

A new automated luggage storage shop in central Donostia / San Sebastián — pincode entry, QR-credentialed lockers, three sizes, fully unstaffed 24/7. Built on the LockMe stack and located in the city's highest-traffic tourist strip.

DSS Lockers goes live in Donostia: 24/7 unstaffed luggage storage five minutes from La Concha

This week DSS Lockers goes live — a new automated luggage storage shop in central Donostia / San Sebastián. The opening lands just before Aste Nagusia 2026 (15-22 August) — the busiest tourist week of the year in Donostia, with the international fireworks contest over La Concha as its centrepiece — and the timing is not accidental. The founder wanted the shop operating before volume peaked.

For us at LockMe, DSS Lockers is an interesting case for two reasons: first, it's a 100% unstaffed shop — no reception, no on-site personnel during business hours, everything resolved between the street and the customer's phone — and second, it sits five minutes' walk from La Concha, arguably the most famous urban beach in Europe. Premium location + zero-staff operation is a combination that's genuinely hard to find in European tourism today.

Here's a tour of everything DSS Lockers has running right now.

The location: Calle San Martín 46, steps from La Concha

DSS Lockers is at Calle San Martín Kalea 46, in the Centro district of Donostia — 5 minutes on foot from La Concha beach, 10 minutes from the main train station, and 9 minutes from the bus station. It's also within an easy walk of the Boulevard, the Parte Vieja (old town), and Plaza de Gipuzkoa.

The logic behind the location is the usual urban-tourism playbook: the closer to the main tourist draw, the higher the natural footfall of visitors with luggage looking to solve the early check-in / late check-out gap. In Donostia, that draw is La Concha — and in August, during Aste Nagusia, it multiplies by an order of magnitude. Five minutes' walk from the beach is the sweet spot: close to the flow, but on a side street where rents don't reach the impossible levels of the direct beachfront promenade.

Everything DSS Lockers has live from day 1

DSS Lockers isn't just a locker room: it's a full deployment of the LockMe stack, with every booking channel active from day one.

Branded booking site — dsslockers.com. Own domain, DSS Lockers' own visual identity, full booking flow integrated on their site. Customers book directly on the operator's own web without paying commission to intermediary marketplaces.

Native multilingual: Spanish, English, French, German, Basque and Catalan. The city receives tourism from other parts of Spain and from across Europe (the French border sits just 20 km away and German and English visitors flow in year-round), and a significant share of the local clientele prefers to handle their booking in Basque. DSS Lockers offers all six languages from the home page, and the full booking flow works in any of them — including confirmation emails and receipts.

Interior of the DSS Lockers shop

In-store kiosk. For walk-ins who arrive without a reservation, the kiosk closes the sale in under two minutes with card or contactless payment.

WhatsApp AI booking agent. DSS Lockers runs LockMe's AI assistant from day one. A customer can reserve an entire locker (date, time, size, payment) entirely inside a WhatsApp conversation — in whatever language they want to write.

Remote operations portal. The operator sees the state of every locker from their phone or laptop without needing to be physically at the shop. They can monitor occupancy in real time, remotely open lockers if a customer has an incident, create discount coupons, and generate accounting reports.

Local SEO blog. DSS Lockers has its own blog on dsslockers.com with content optimised for Donostia local search — from generic luggage-storage queries to specific events like Aste Nagusia, Bilbao's Semana Grande, or the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It's part of the managed SEO package we offer to clients who contract it.

100% unstaffed access: pincode to the shop + QR to the locker

Detail of the automated shop entry

This is the operational detail that makes DSS Lockers a singular case: the shop has no staff on site during business hours. Access is handled in two layers:

  1. Pincode to enter the shop. Each booking generates a unique numeric code that the customer enters on the keypad by the door. The door unlocks; the customer walks in.
  2. QR to open the locker. Once inside, the customer scans their QR code at the central kiosk. Their assigned locker opens automatically. They drop their bags, close the door, and leave.

On return, the same pincode reopens the shop, the same QR reopens the locker. The entire process — arrival, drop-off, pick-up — runs without human interaction, 24 hours a day.

This is what enables operating without local headcount: DSS Lockers can bill 24/7 with minimal operating costs. The only recurring human work is periodic maintenance (cleaning, hardware checks) — not customer service, not key management.

For the visitor, the experience is also faster: no queue at a counter, no wait for staff to assign a locker, no restricted pickup hours. You arrive when you arrive — even at 3 AM after a night of fireworks over La Concha.

Three sizes calibrated for Donostia's tourist profile

Locker area with different sizes

DSS Lockers has chosen a three-size configuration — small (S), medium (M), and extra-large (XL) — matched to the city's traffic profile:

  • S (small) — for hiking backpacks, handbags, professional camera bags, cycling helmets. Perfect for the day-tripper coming from Bilbao or Bayonne to spend the afternoon on La Concha.
  • M (medium) — for cabin suitcases, weekend backpacks, or two smaller backpacks together. Historically the most-requested size in urban luggage storage.
  • XL (extra-large) — for large suitcases, multiple suitcases together, or the equipment of athletes and musicians. For the visitor arriving in Donostia with all their luggage who can't check in until the afternoon.

View of the locker installation

A single customer can book multiple lockers of different sizes if travelling in a group — common with the crews landing together for the Film Festival or for Aste Nagusia — and the system handles it as one joint booking with a single payment.

The DSS Lockers brand, not LockMe

DSS Lockers branding inside the shop

A detail that's sometimes overlooked but is fundamental: LockMe is invisible to the end customer. Everything the visitor sees — the dsslockers.com website, the logo on the shopfront, the kiosk, confirmation emails, receipts, the WhatsApp chat, even the locker-size images on the site — is rendered in DSS Lockers' visual identity, not LockMe's.

This matters for several reasons:

  1. The operator builds their brand, not ours. The Google Business reviews go to DSS Lockers, not LockMe. Backlinks point to dsslockers.com. The local-market share built up over the next 3-5 years belongs to DSS Lockers.
  2. The operator can sell the shop as an asset. A business with its own brand, its own domain, and consolidated online presence is a transferable asset with real value. A franchisee of an outside brand can only sell the sales point back to the franchisor.
  3. The operator controls pricing. DSS Lockers adjusts rates in real time from the portal — up in August during Aste Nagusia, down in January — without asking anyone's permission.

In short: LockMe is the engine. DSS Lockers is the brand and the business.

Timing: why open right before Aste Nagusia

Final view of the installation

Opening a luggage storage shop in Donostia in the week before Aste Nagusia is a very clear strategic call. In a normal week, Donostia receives hundreds of visitors with luggage. In Aste Nagusia, tens of thousands — plus day-trippers coming up from Bilbao, Pamplona, Vitoria or Bayonne for the fireworks over La Concha.

A business opening in early August will process more bookings in the following three weeks than many urban luggage-storage shops process in six months of normal operation. It's also the best possible stress test for a new deployment: if the system survives Aste Nagusia, it survives anything.

After Aste Nagusia comes September — the San Sebastián International Film Festival, another peak-traffic week — and then October-November, months when Donostia continues to receive tourism thanks to its gastronomic scene and proximity to the French border.

For operators: what a fully unstaffed deployment looks like

DSS Lockers is a fairly pure example of what LockMe can build when an operator prioritises unstaffed operation. The essential components:

  1. Own domain and multilingual booking site — don't depend on marketplaces that take 15-20% commission, and offer the languages your clientele actually speaks.
  2. In-store kiosk — capture walk-ins who arrive without a reservation.
  3. WhatsApp AI channel — reduce customer-support load and capture bookings where the customer is already messaging.
  4. Remote management portal — operate from anywhere, at any time.
  5. Two-layer unstaffed access: pincode to the shop + QR to the locker — enables 24/7 operation without staff, with minimal operating costs.
  6. Local SEO from day one — an optimised blog captures organic traffic from before the opening.

If you have a location in mind and are considering opening a luggage storage shop in a European tourist city, the DSS Lockers deployment is a reference case: high footfall, own brand, unstaffed operation. And we can build it in weeks, not months.
